Sprecometro: An App to Measure and Reduce Food Waste
Sprecometro is an Android app developed by Giorgio Segrè in the Education & Reference category. It was created by the Waste Watcher International Observatory on food and sustainability, in collaboration with the Department of Agri-food Sciences and Technologies of the University of Bologna and the Last Minute Market, an academic social spin-off company of Alma Mater for the Zero Waste Campaign.
The app measures food waste in grams, evaluates its economic and environmental impact, and proposes educational content to reduce waste quantitatively and qualitatively. Users can track their progress over time by updating their waste diary, enabling them to set reduction goals in line with the UN's Sustainable Development Agenda (12.3: halve food waste byThe app also allows users to compare their progress with others, creating reference clusters (family, school/university class, company, public administration, etc.). Sprecometro is connected to an Instagram channel where users can share results and progress, making it a challenge to win together.
Sprecometro is based on self-perception and aims to generate awareness and useful knowledge to guide individual choices regarding the sustainable use of natural resources, the reduction and prevention of food waste, and the adoption of healthy and sustainable diets.
